Nexus: A geometric minimalist relief sculpture.

So many shapes to choose from. Which ones belong? How big should they be?

Using the photocopied templates, overlays are drawn on paper and cut out. These overlays are transferred on to 1/8 wood which is cut and sanded.

The field is painted in white enamel while the frame in red.

The paper shapes are traced on to PVC board. Using a hand held jig saw the shapes take shape-then sanded to their final form.

The original shapes are painted in black enamel paint. Overlays in white. Each set is given several coats.

Shapes and their overlays are test fitted to the board.

The pine cradling and plywood panel are fastened together with glue and screws.

The winners become clear. Like a beautiful harmony the shapes resonate perfect pitch, balance, and rhythem for this piece. The chosen shapes are photocopied, enlarged, and cut out.

The center of each shape is determined and marked with a pin. String is used to align the centers of the shapes.

Hardwood strips are added to frame the relief sculpture. The wood is clamped, glued, and screwed into place. All surfaces are sanded.

Initial placement of PVC shapes. Needs a bit of tuning.

Final adjustments are made. To secure the black shapes construction adhesive and scews are used. White overlays are glued. String is used to align all red pins on the center point of the black diamond.
